Frequently Asked Questions

Planning a trip to the Pacific Northwest can feel a little like trying to pack for all four seasons in one backpack. I get it. That’s exactly why Explorer Sue exists.

Below are answers to the questions I get most often about my travel blog, trip planning services, digital guides, and how I work. And if you still have questions after this, you can always contact me here.

About Explorer Sue

Who is Explorer Sue?

Hi, I’m Sue — the voice behind Explorer Sue. I’m a Pacific Northwest travel writer, local explorer, and the kind of person who will absolutely detour for a scenic overlook, a weird roadside attraction, or a really good bakery.

I create practical, honest, and experience-based travel content to help people plan memorable trips around Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. My goal is to make your trip easier to plan, more fun to take, and a whole lot less overwhelming.

Where are you based?

I’m based in the Pacific Northwest, which means I’m lucky enough to explore this beautiful corner of the world regularly and write from a local perspective.

That also means I know the PNW is not just “Seattle and rain.” There’s a lot more going on here, and I’m here to help you find it.

What destinations do you cover?

Explorer Sue focuses primarily on:

  • Washington State
  • Oregon
  • British Columbia

You’ll also find some content on nearby road trips, RV travel, weekend getaways, outdoor adventures, and a few other destinations I think are worth your time.

Do you personally visit the places you write about?

Yes — whenever possible, I write from firsthand experience. I personally visit many of the towns, trails, restaurants, campgrounds, and attractions I feature on Explorer Sue.

When I include additional research, I use reputable sources and local insight to make sure the information is accurate and useful. But firsthand experience is a big part of how I build content and recommendations.

Why should I trust your travel advice?

Because I’m not just rewriting the same generic travel fluff you’ve already read 17 times.

I live in the Pacific Northwest, spend a lot of time exploring it, and create content designed to actually help people plan real trips. I focus on practical details, honest recommendations, and places that are genuinely worth your time.

If something is inconvenient, overrated, hard to access, seasonal, weather-dependent, or only worth it under certain conditions, I try to tell you that too.

Blog Content and Recommendations

Are your recommendations sponsored?

Some content on Explorer Sue may include sponsored partnerships, but I only share places, experiences, or products that are relevant to my audience and a good fit for the site.

If a post is sponsored, I disclose that clearly.

Do you use affiliate links?

Yes. Some blog posts and pages may include affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you book or buy through those links, at no extra cost to you.

That helps support Explorer Sue and keeps the site running — so thank you.

You can read more on my disclosure and privacy pages.

How do you choose what to recommend?

I look for places and experiences that are genuinely useful, memorable, and worth recommending to travelers.

That includes a mix of:

  • Firsthand experience
  • Local insight
  • Reader value
  • Practical logistics
  • Overall trip quality

In other words, I’m not here to recommend something just because it looks cute on Instagram.

Are your itineraries good for first-time visitors?

Yes — many of my itineraries and guides are especially helpful for first-time visitors to the Pacific Northwest.

I try to include the right mix of iconic highlights, lesser-known gems, and practical advice so you can make the most of your trip without overcomplicating it.

Do you only cover outdoor travel?

Nope. While I love scenic drives, hikes, beaches, and national parks, Explorer Sue also covers:

  • Food and drink
  • Small towns
  • Weekend getaways
  • Indoor activities
  • Seasonal travel ideas
  • Road trips
  • City itineraries

Because not every trip needs to involve hiking boots and trail mix.

Pacific Northwest Travel Questions

What is the best time to visit the Pacific Northwest?

That depends on what kind of trip you want.

Summer is the most popular time thanks to the best weather, long daylight hours, and easier mountain access. Fall is fantastic for fewer crowds and beautiful scenery. Spring can be gorgeous, especially for waterfalls and wildflowers, but weather can be mixed. Winter is great for cozy getaways, storm watching, and snow sports.

There’s no one perfect season — just the right season for your trip.

Do I need a car to explore the Pacific Northwest?

In many cases, yes.

If you’re sticking to Seattle or Portland, you may not need a car for the whole trip. But for road trips, small towns, coast travel, national parks, waterfalls, hiking areas, and most of the best hidden gems, having a car makes a huge difference.

The Pacific Northwest is beautiful, but it is not always public-transit convenient.

How many days do I need for a Pacific Northwest trip?

You can absolutely enjoy a long weekend here, but if you want to cover multiple regions, more time is better.

As a general rule:

  • 3 days works for one city or one focused destination
  • 5 to 7 days works well for a regional road trip
  • 10+ days gives you time to explore at a more enjoyable pace

Trying to do all of Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia in four days is ambitious in a way I do not recommend.

What should I pack for a Pacific Northwest trip?

Layers. Always layers.

Even in summer, weather can shift quickly depending on where you are. A good Pacific Northwest packing list often includes:

  • A waterproof jacket
  • Comfortable walking shoes or hiking shoes
  • Layers for cool mornings and evenings
  • Sun protection
  • A reusable water bottle
  • A daypack
  • Clothes that can handle changing weather

If you’re heading out on a longer trip, my digital shop includes helpful planning resources too.

Is the Pacific Northwest good for families?

Yes — it can be fantastic for families.

There are plenty of family-friendly road trips, beaches, parks, ferry rides, easy hikes, wildlife experiences, and fun small towns throughout the region. The key is choosing the right destinations and pacing your itinerary well.

Is the Pacific Northwest good for solo travelers?

Also yes.

The Pacific Northwest can be a great destination for solo travelers, especially if you enjoy scenic drives, coffee shops, walkable cities, nature, and flexible itineraries. As always, some destinations are easier to navigate than others, and planning ahead helps.

Is the Pacific Northwest expensive?

It can be, especially in peak summer and in major cities or highly popular destinations.

That said, there are absolutely ways to travel here on a more reasonable budget by choosing shoulder season travel, mixing pricier stops with more affordable ones, booking early, and planning strategically.
