Photo: Winter Beauty Farmland in Iowa

As bleak as Iowa in the winter seems at times, with its barren and flat landscape, great beauty is still to be found, if you know where to look. Taken during Magic Hour on a winter day, this Western Iowa farm was captured in the raw next to some railroad tracks and tanker trucks.

Many farmers have less to do between the last harvest of October, and planting season starting in March. Some help out their local community by volunteering, some take part time jobs in town, and some turn to creative pursuits such as painting and ceramics. Midwestern life is unique from other parts of the U.S. People here have carved out their own culture, and their own ways of looking at life. It is a quieter way of living that is a welcome respite from the business of big city life.
